Fettis pleased to be selected

April 10, 2004

Speaking ahead of today’s game against QPR, Grimsby’s on loan goalkeeper Alan Fettis talked about his recent trip to Estonia:
He said “It is always nice to be picked for your country.
“I have played 25 games for Northern Ireland, and I would have liked to have got another one against Estonia.
“But I was very pleased we got the win and kept a clean sheet. We played as a team and created a lot of chances.
“If we had taken a few more of them I might have come on for a few minutes.”
He also believes that Grimsby will avoid the drop this season.

After making a miraculous recovery from whatever ‘injury’ that ‘forced’ him to pull out of the Northern Ireland squad last week, Roy Carroll turned out for Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal at Villa Park. Roy made two great saves in the first half, one of them almost defying belief but wasn’t bothered too much in the second as he picked up his 2nd clean sheet in 3 games. However Alan Fettis kept another clean sheet for Grimsby today as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 today, so maybe his place on the bench isn’t as secure as he thinks..

Meanwhile Maik Taylor was showing that a trip to Eastern Europe isn’t as bad as it’s cracked up to be with a number of top drawer saves during Birmingham’s goalless away draw with Fulham.
Also in the English Premiership Aaron Hughes returned to a Newcastle side that beat Everton 4-2, and Wolves got stuffed 4-1 by Southampton because Mark Clyde’s still injured.
Norwich went 3 points clear at the top of the English First Division today with a 5-3 win over Burnley today. McVeigh had recovered but didn’t manage to score any of them, perhaps because he didn’t train all week (either his injury was genuine or he took the whole acting thing a bit too far). Mulryne started on the bench again. Mark Williams was part of a Wimbledon defence that kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win against Wigan.
In Division 2 Plymouth made the mistake of not starting with young Tony Capaldi, and therefore got beat 1-0 by Barnsley. For once Warren Feeney didn’t score as Bournemouth drew 1-1 with Colchester. Tommy Doc played for Bristol City in their vital one nothing win over QPR.
Stuart Elliot set up Hull’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Kidderminster Harriers. Colin Murdock nearly scored for the second Saturday in a row, but some other punter got the final touch on his ‘goalbound header’ in a 3-1 win for Hibs over Livingston.
